Naomh Colmcille reserves hosted Downings in the league at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. In the last few previous meetings of these two sides, Naomh Colmcille had found it tough going and suffered a couple of heavy defeats. This was not the case on Sunday afternoon and from the first few minutes it was obvious that Naomh Colmcille were going to put it up to the league leaders.
The opening quarter was very tight and it was Naomh Colmcille who got off the mark first and followed up with another point in quick succession. Downings pulled two points back from frees and converted a 3rd free on the stroke of half time to go in one point ahead at the break.
Naomh Colmcille had a lot of possession in the second half and created a series of scoring opportunities but were unable to convert them. Downings had fewer chances but what chances they had they made the most of and scored a further 5 points without reply.
Naomh Colmcille’s afternoon was summed up in the final move of the game when Ciaran Callaghan broke through on the right and fisted towards Mark Callaghan who was unmarked 10 yards in front of goal, but the ball floated tanatalisingly beyond his reach and the chance was gone.
Despite the final scoreline, Naomh Colmcille can take some comfort from a good performance and had a few of the chances in the second half gone over, they could have taken something from the game.
