Seniors beat Red Hugh’s at home

Match report by Karol Friel
On Sunday last the Naomh Colmcille Seniors got the very important 2 league points from this closely contested game.
Going into this game confidence was high for the Naomh Colmcille lads after convincing win in the Championship play off game last weekend against Downings.
Red Hugh’s after a number of games unbeaten had come into this one with a 1 point lead in the table over the Colmcille team, they too with strong promotion hopes this season.
The highlight of the first half was a superb Naomh Colmcille move which saw a fantastic shot and goal from Ryan McKinley, with the line calling for him to take his point, Ryan had goal on his mind and after evading 2-3 tackles finished powerfully past the Red Hugh’s keeper.
Also in the first half Ryan Mc Erlean and Richard Clarke got good points from play and 2 frees from Barry O’Hagan, kept the home side in the lead at half time.
Red Hugh’s scores came mostly from free kicks and a couple from the lively full forward who was showing well throughout.
The second half was pretty similar to the first, with possession hard to come by for both teams, this had all the signs that there was going to be very little to separate the teams at the final whistle, this turned out to be the case as the teams traded points throughout, mostly from free kicks.
At the end the Naomh Colmcille team held on for a 1 point victory, this one really could have gone either way.
This result keeps the Colmcille lads in touch of a playoff place now with 4 leagues games left, 3 of those at home, with the continued commitment this is a great opportunity for further development.
The Club would like to take this opportunity to wish Liam Grant all the best as he pursues a teaching career abroad, Liam has been an important player this season, good luck Liam and thanks.
