Naomh Colmcille reserves travelled to Muff yesterday evening to play Malin in the Junior B Championship Quarter Final.
The first half was extremely close, with the teams never more than a single score apart. Don Hegarty opening the scoring for Naomh Colmcille, Gerard Devenney scored two points and although Aiden Friel missed his first free, he sent the following two over the bar. However, Malin were matching Naomh Colmcille score for score and the match was evenly balanced.
As the half drew to a close, Adrian Marsh pounced on a breaking ball 10 metres out on the angle and slotted the ball into the net to give Naomh Colmcille a 1-05 to 0-05 lead. The lead didn’t last long however, as Malin found the net at the other end a couple of minutes later, leaving the half time scores all square at 1-05 to 1-05.
The third quarter followed the same pattern as the first half, with the teams exchanging scores and neither team able to carve out a lead. Aiden Friel was again accurate from two frees, and Darky Callaghan pointed after a great run and goal effort from Don Hegarty was blocked down.
In the final quarter, however, the entire Naomh Colmcille team showed great commitment and fitness to outscore Malin and push on for the win. In the last ten minutes, the Naomh Colmcille defence restricted Malin to a single point, while at the other end two frees from Aiden Friel and points from Eddie Gillespie and Don Hegarty ensured a 1-12 to 1-09 win for Naomh Colmcille, who now go into the draw for the semi-final.
