Naomh Colmcille hosted St Michael’s today at Páirc Cholmcille in the first leg of their Junior B Championship encounter.
With both teams wearing red and white jerseys, Naomh Colmcille stripped out in a kit borrowed from their local rivals, Burt. Conditions were blustery, with the odd heavy shower making handling tricky.
Naomh Colmcille got off to a poor start and conceded an early goal after losing possession in midfield, and let the visitors in for another point a few minutes later. The home side got a point on the board after a few minutes, but as the half went on they were unable to capitalise on a series of scoring opportunities and hit several wides. Naomh Colmcille converted a couple of frees and St Michael’s got another point to bring a scrappy first half to a close, with the visitors leading by 1-02 to 0-3.
In the second half Naomh Colmcille got a grip of the game around the middle of the park, and were more accurate with their scoring. Points from Gerard Devenney, Eddie Gillespie, Aiden Friel and Andrew Clarke got them back into the game and then into a good lead. At the other end, the home defence dealt effectively with any threat that came their way. The visitors were restricted to a single point in the second half, and the final score was 0-12 to 1-03 in Naomh Colmcille’s favour.
The return leg will take place in a fortnight’s time, when St Michael’s will have home advantage and will seek to take the tie to a play off.
