Naomh Colmcille minors won the League Division 2 title tonight with a 2-8 to 0-9 victory over Letterkenny Gaels at Glenswilly. The teams took to the field at 6:45 this evening in showery conditions for the 2008 Minor League Division 2 title decider.
The first half was a tight affair. Mark Dowds was first to register a score, pointing from a free, but Letterkenny Gaels replied immediately with a well worked point from play. Joe Donaghey sent the ball over for Naomh Colmcille to restore the lead, but Letterkenny Gaels then proceded to dominate for a 10-15 minute period, scoring 3 points without reply. Naomh Colmcille had a few goal chances and Barry O’Donnell was unlucky to see an effort rebound off the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Mark Dowds then pointed from a free, before Oisin McMenamin scored a goal that would give Naomh Colmcille a 1-3 to 0-4 advantage at half time.
Whatever was said at half time seemed to do the trick as Naomh Colmcille emerged from the dressing room re-invigorated and dominated the second half right from the whistle. Barry O’Donnell and Ryan McErlean scored excellent points before Oisin McMenamin showed great pace and power to drive in towards goal from the right wing and hand pass Luke Hassett who skilfully slotted the ball into the net for Naomh Colmcille’s second goal.
Letterkenny Gaels fought hard to claw back the defecit in the final quarter, but further points from Ryan McErlean, Oisin McMenamin and a sublime strike from a 45 by Mark Dowds saw Naomh Colmcille stay in front and run out deserving winners with a final scoreline of 2-8 to 0-9.
Congratulations to the entire squad, management and backroom team from everybody associated with the club.
