The Under 10s A and B teams travelled to Glenfin yesterday to compete in the finals of the Blitz. With the rain teeming down and a strong wind, conditions were difficult on Glenfin’s temporary pitch.
The A team were first out against a strong Convoy team. Despite being a few players down due to holidays and illness, Naomh Colmcille put in an excellent performance and lost out by a single point in the end.
The B team played the hosts in their final. As the teams lined out, it was clear that it was a case of “little and large” in midfield, as Naomh Colmcille’s midfielders found themselves up against two bigger, older Glenfin players. This didn’t seem to bother them though, and the first half was a close affair, with the home side pointing twice but the visitors pulling one back before half time.
The rain and wind continued in the second half but the players showed great determination and battled on regardless. Two early points by Glenfin streched their lead but a great goal in reply by Naomh Comcille brought them back into the match and levelled the scores at 0-4 to 1-1. However, a late goal from the home side that Naomh Colmcille defence almost kept out saw them snatch victory.
Congratulations to all of Naomh Colmcille’s players for great performances all round in very difficult conditions. Having won both their finals last year and lost a lot of players to the Under 12s, this year’s squad is very young and will no doubt continue to develop for next year.
Many thanks also to Glenfin for their great hospitality and to all the other teams who took part.
